Peji (Sage) Trudell – What happens if the pipeline is completed? “It’s not only going to be destructive to the reservation and the native people, I think the point that’s being missed is that it’s going be destructive to the earth as well and it’s not just going to be the native people that suffer. The farmers that are around here, North Dakota and South Dakota are very big agricultural areas, and they stand to lose a lot, whether they realize it or not. It’s going to affect the growth of their crops. It’s going to kill and destroy a lot of things, not just the people, and there’s a lot to lose in that. Also, I don’t want my kids to have to pay for their water. In essence, we already do that because we pay for water supply, but in reality, there’s so much water that shouldn’t have to be necessary, but I can see a huge situation that money can’t fix.” Is this resistance movement something that can move to another fossil fuel fight? “Actually, in reality I do. As we stand in peace and prayer and sometimes that gets lost in the negative aspects shown in the media, the true heart of whats happening here is that nations from all over the world are coming here to stand together to support the water here. Standing Rock may be the place, may be the first to have actually taken a stance, but I believe that it’s drawing other people. What I’d really like to see is that this isn’t the only place that this is happening in the United States, I’d like to see camps like this pop up everywhere and really be for the people and have that support and that love of themselves. In an essence in that in loving yourself and taking care of yourself, that you’re going to love the next person. You’re going to be more willing to love the earth and recognize the nurturing that she gives to us. I believe that she will outlive humanity if that’s what needs to happen to save herself. Right now, she’s providing everything we need, and water is a huge source of life. It really is life. It’s live giving, it’s live giving. You come from water when you come from the womb. The water carries you until you’re ready to come into the world. That’s important to acknowledge that.” What affect will Donald Trump’s election have on you? “I’m not sure. I don’t really play into politics. One of the reasons I don’t, is because I don’t believe that the face that they show, is real. In some aspects I believe they are puppets. My personal opinion of Donald Trump is not an excellent one. I believe that he’s about the money. I know this is going to sound crazy, but I believe that they allowed Barak Obama to become the president because he wasn’t the president they wanted, but they knew Trump was coming. To pacify the people, they gave them an African American president when in reality, Trump was always the one because he’s easier to control and he lives for the money. That’s my perception of it. That’s the feeling that I get.”
