Seattle activists block an entrance to the Port of Seattle to protest the Zim Chicago carrying Israeli goods

Activists and community members spent hours in the sun preventing workers from entering the Port of Seattle to unload the Zim container ship, Chicago. Police eventually moved protestors back to the sidewalks to allow vehicles to pass, although demonstrators were moving in and out of traffic, once bicycle demonstrator was knocked to the ground by SPD and arrested while he was riding between the cars. The crowd was thinning at 6pm as demonstrators held a meeting to discuss future action.

From the Block The Boat Northwest website…

END THE SIEGE ON GAZA!

BOYCOTT, DIVESTMENT, SANCTIONS!

END U.S. SUPPORT FOR ISRAELI SETTLER-COLONIALIST GENOCIDE AND OCCUPATION!

When the “Zim Chicago” enters the Port of Tacoma on (estimated) August 22nd and the Port of Seattle on (estimated) August 25, we will conduct blockades to prevent the unloading of its cargo, starting early and lasting all day. Estimated dates of arrival are subject to change, and we will continue to give accurate updates on this website. We will also give exact meeting places for the actions in the coming days. Keep checking!

These actions are economic sanctions against Zim Shipping, Israel’s largest shipping company, in response to the current siege of Gaza and the ongoing occupation of Palestine. Any international commerce that profits Israeli companies is oppressing Palestinians. Israel could not continue its occupation and genocide without economic and military support of the United States government. To help end this oppression we must block that support in every way we can.

The toll of “Operation Protective Edge” is almost 1,900 Gazans killed (nearly all civilians), 31% of them children, and almost 10,000 injured. We must act in solidarity with those in Palestine who live under occupation and are facing down genocide. Let’s refuse to let Israeli ships use our ports! Blockade til they go away! Oakland, CA will block a Zim ship on August 16th. In Seattle we shut down the Port for a day in December of 2011 — we can do it again and again. Blockades can and must happen everywhere there is a port, as a contribution to the goal of the complete collapse of the economic base of Israeli occupation.

We can’t do this without your presence! Everyone is welcome, young and old. Bring banners, flags, flyers, sound systems, musical instruments, and your friends. If you can’t blockade, you can participate in the supporting rallies — the more people there, the safer we’ll all be.

Seattle Marches In Solidarity With Ferguson, MO And All Those Affected By Police Violence

Demonstrators gathered at Westlake Park to rally in solidarity with Ferguson, MO and others affected by police brutality. The rally soon led to a march down the sidewalk on Pine to 3rd Ave. As the 100+ activists and protestors crossed 4th Ave on their way up Pike St., they abandoned the sidewalk to march in the street. Protestors marched to 12th Ave, followed by SPD bicycle units, where they gathered in front of the East Precinct of the Seattle Police Department chanting “Hands up, don’t shoot” and “Being black is not a crime”. After less than 30 minutes of blocking the South bound lane of 12th Ave in front of the police station, demonstrators marched down Pine and back to Westlake Park.

International Day of Protest Marks One Year Anniversary of Nestora Salgado’s Illegal Detention and Imprisonment in Mexico

A few dozen demonstrators marched outside of the Jackson Federal Building in Seattle to protest the illegal detention of Nestora Salgado, a naturalized U.S. citizen and leader of an indigenous community defense force (Salgado was raised in Olinala, Guerrero, Mexico).

From the Facebook Event Page…

Nestora Salgado is an indigenous leader, a naturalized U.S. citizen and political prisoner in Mexico. She was seized without an arrest warrant by Mexican federal soldiers last August and as a result of her leadership role in community policing against organized crime, which has swept through the indigenous communities of the state of Guerrero over the last several years. For 12 months, she has been denied the right to see her lawyers. Orders to free her by a federal judge have been ignored. Kept in isolation without medical attention, she represents hundreds of people in self defense groups who have been jailed for defending their communities against powerful, politically connected criminal cartels. In Guerrero, indigenous people have the constitutional right to form such forces; they have been emulated in other states and communities by Mexicans who consider it a necessity for self-preservation and dignity.

And Nestora isn’t the only one. In June, the Mexican government expanded its occupation and repression in Michoacán, arresting Dr. José Mireles and nearly 100 of his followers. They were on their way to regain public control of Lázaro Cárdenas port, the largest seaport in Mexico, from a drug cartel known as the Knights Templar. This criminal syndicate used the port to export goods and resources stolen from the people of the region. Today Nestora Salgado and Dr. José Mireles are powerful symbols of popular resistance against Mexican government corruption and unbridled crime. As U.S. military aid to Mexico increases, the violence continues.

Seattle holds vigil in solidarity with Ferguson, MO

Seattle’s Westlake Park was the rally point for Seattle’s solidarity action and silent vigil for Ferguson, MO. More than 150 activists and community members tied red ribbons to their arms and stood in silence for an hour as Seattle’s rush hour traffic flashed by with horns and sirens. The white noise of the city drowned out by the silence of anger, the silence of sadness, fear, and frustration. Fists were raised, messages were sent, and solidarity was shown from Seattle.

Activists Protest Bombing of Gaza and innocent passerby harassed by pro Israel opposition and arrested

Demonstrators protest the violence in Gaza during a pro Palestine rally in Seattle. As protestors lined the sidewalks in Westlake Park, a pro Israel supporter walks by, harassing the demonstrators, yelling in peoples faces, screaming obscenities, and racial slurs. After crossing the street and harassing another group of demonstrators, the man tore off his shirt and began walking towards the group with fists clenched. As someone who wasn’t a part of the demonstration walked by, the pro Israel supporter turned and said something as he passed. The man then turned around as if he was going to swing, but thought better of it. The pro Israel supporter squared off with him, but a Westlake security guard who was watching the interaction pulled out his pepper spray, and sprayed the innocent passerby, grabbed him by the arm and tried to wrestle him to the ground. He was eventually led off into Westlake Center as SPD arrived on the scene. The below Youtube video link is post pepper spray but pre arrest.

Jewish Voice for Peace Activists Protest And Blockade Boeing in Seattle

An 8:30am protest brought 30-40 activists from Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), supporters of Palestine, and concerned community members to Boeing’s Defense, Space, and Security building at 92nd Ave. and Airport Way in Tukwila, Washington.

As protestors blocked the entrance by lying down in the crosswalk with arms linked through thick, tape wrapped, cardboard tubes, Boeing security quickly blocked the streets and contacted Tukwila Police. Several police vehicles arrived and began directing traffic away from the blockade.

For 3 hours demonstrators chanted pro Palestine chants and read the names of the civilians who were killed in Palestine during the past 3 weeks. At the end of the third hour, with the sun beating down on the protestors, they decided to call it a day and marched away down the sidewalk. There were no arrests or injuries.

Seattle Activists from Jewish Voice for Peace and Queers Against Israeli Apartheid Succeed in Blocking Entrance of Boeing Office, Protesting the Israeli assault on Gaza

Nine demonstrators blockaded the main entrance of the Tukwila Boeing facility shortly after 8:30 AM this morning. More than forty protesters gathered with them, holding signs, reading the names of the dead, and lying across the sidewalk in a symbolic“die-in” to represent the more than 1,000 Palestinians Israel has killed in the last 21 days.

Eliana Horn, demonstrator who risked arrest today said: “As a Jew, I am outraged that Israel’s one-sided war of destruction is being done in my name. Just this morning, Israel killed 7 children as they played on a refugee camp playground. Boeing is directly profiting from such unconscionable violence. As a granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, I am proud that I risked arrest to slow down Boeing’s ability to arm the Israeli war machine, even if just for today.”

Samira Shifteh, a member of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid, a co-sponsor of today’s action, saw mixed reactions from the Boeing employees who could not enter the facility. While some offered praise, others were openly hostile. She said: “There is great irony that Boeing employees might complain about a three hour blockade while the company profits from Israel’s ongoing siege on Gaza that holds 1.8 million Palestinians captive, offering absolutely no place to run, hide, or flee while bombs are falling.”

Eitan Isaacson, an Israeli member of JVP spoke to the simple economics behind their protest: “This terrible bloodshed will never end while Boeing and other war profiteers make enormous profit from Israel’s current and ongoing assault on Palestinians. We locked down in the street today to demonstrate that people like you and I have the power to literally change that equation.”

The protest today ended when the whole group coalesced around the activists blocking the intersection. Together, the group started chanting “Shut Down Israel’s War Machine, War Profiteering is Obscene” as they marched away from the site.

Wendy Somerson, an organizer of today’s demonstration and member of Jewish Voice for Peace said: “At the very same time that we were blocking the entrance to Boeing, young Jews in New York were also engaging in civil disobedience at the headquarters of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations. All together we are raising a powerful demand to end support and corporate complicity for Israel’s decades old assault on Palestinian human rights.”
